A Different Kind of Love

Laws, legality, right and wrong
Freedom, justice, give and take
We fight a war among ourselves
Trying to convince the other that only our way is right
Whether this way is right or that way is wrong
What matters is our tone
Our ability to speak without condemnation
Our ability to listen free of judgement
I promise you it's harder than you think
But I guarantee you it's not out of reach
What matters is our ability to run up and hug our enemy, which seems to be a hypocritical struggle these days
We say "love our enemies" but then turn and judge our neighbors
Tell me, how can we love our enemies if we first throw stones at those on our team
Laws, legality, right and wrong
Freedom, justice, give and take
We fight a war among ourselves
Trying to convince the other that only our way is right
Whether this way is right or that way is wrong
If we can love, and I mean deeply love, does the rest of it really matter?
Some will say yes, some will say no
Either way, may hope and grace come and cover us all
I‘m not blind, I am attempting to convince you to love without hesitation
A love that doesn't hold a position, a political party or an attachment to safety
Who I am is seeping through each line and every word
A hippie kind of love some may call it
It works for me, it might not work for you
An all inclusive, never wavering, self sacrificing type of love We agree this love is grand and we can see our world aching at the bones for it
But our ability to walk it out when daggers start getting thrown? Now that’s a different story
And this is what I find beautiful
A diverse people with diverse perspectives
May we find strength in differences as we pursue a unified front
Just like a bouquet of wildflowers; how boring it is if they remain identical
Each flower unique as they compliment each other, more beautiful together
Laws, legality, right and wrong
Freedom, justice, give and take
We fight a war among ourselves
Trying to convince the other that only our way is right
Whether this way is right or that way is wrong
I see a world struggling to get in sync
So for now, I hope we can all agree, that love might not be as complicated as we think
